Distribution | Coastal Plain, including maritime situations. Ranges inland to Moore and Richmond counties.
Que. to MN south to FL and TX. Primarily the outer Coastal Plain, but also inland around the Great Lakes and along the main stem of the Mississippi River. | |
Abundance | Frequent in the lower Coastal Plain and Outer Banks/barrier islands; but uncommon in the inner half of the province. Rather rare in the Sandhills and lowermost Piedmont (Richmond County). The species is numerous enough to have a State Rank of S4, and not just S3S4. | |
Habitat | Fresh-tidal marshes, upper margins of brackish marshes, interdune marshes, freshwater marshes inland. | |
Phenology | Flowering and fruiting July-October. | |
Identification | E. walteri is much taller than our other barnyard-grasses, usually 4-6 feet high, and is further distinguished by the long awns (8-40+ mm in length) on florets that give the inflorescence a long-hairy and softer look. | |
