DistributionSandhills east to the southern half of the Coastal Plain, and sparingly north toward the VA border. A specimen from Buncombe County appears to be correctly identified (at WCUH). The gaps in the map will likely be filled in as botanists learn to recognize this species. This species is a recent split from the former E. cuneifolium, and this may be as common as, or more common than, the other species split off from it -- E. glaucescens.

Coastal Plain, southeastern VA to FL and LA.
AbundanceApparently common in the Sandhills region, but apparently much less common farther eastward toward the coast and north to Gates County. Certainly present in more counties than shown on the map. Abundance levels between this species and E. glaucescens, the two species split from the former E. cuneifolium, are still uncertain, though both are reasonably common in the Sandhills region. As there are many specimens, the website editors suggest a State Rank of S4? for now.
HabitatXeric to dry Longleaf Pine-oak-Wiregrass uplands, pine-oak scrub, sandhills, dry savannas, roadsides through these habitats. Favors sandy soil habitats.
PhenologyFlowering and fruiting late July-October.
IdentificationFormerly lumped within E. cuneifolium (see E. glaucescens), but Narrowleaf Bushy Thoroughwort's leaves are half as wide (3-8 mm wide vs. 5-15 mm wide in that species) and are essentially without teeth (vs. toothed in the outer half in E. glaucescens). In the field, the leaves of E. lineariifolium often appear to be parallel-sided, whereas leaves of E. glaucescens are strongly rounded (convex).
Taxonomic CommentsFormerly part of E. cuneifolium. Some authors suggest that it may of hybrid derivation -- E. hyssopifolium x glaucescens.
