DistributionThroughout the state, except the outermost tier of Coastal Plain counties.

Native of tropical America; in N.A. ME to Man. south to FL and TX; also CA.
AbundanceUncommon in the Mountains, frequent in the Piedmont, Sandhills, and Coastal Plain.
HabitatRoadsides, railroad margins, disturbed soil, waste ground, fields, pastures, barnyards, cropfields, vacant lots.
PhenologyFlowering and fruiting July-October.
IdentificationSpiny Amaranth has rather slender, elongate, pale green inflorescences, but the clincher is the pair of spines at each stem node. Sometimes these spines are not well-developed.
