Author | (L.) A.S. Hitchcock
Distribution | Mountains and upper Piedmont; middle and outer Coastal Plain, including the Outer Banks. Scattered in the central and lower Piedmont, and rare in the Sandhills. Clearly a bimodal range in NC, scarce in the middle of the range.
MA to OH and MO, south to northern FL and LA.
Abundance | Fairly common to frequent in the Mountains, northern Piedmont, and most of the Coastal Plain; rare to uncommon in much of the central and southern Piedmont and Sandhills. Though the NCNHP has this ranked as S3, with collections from nearly 60% of the state's counties this is clearly an S5 species.
Habitat | Swamp forests of various composition (including maritime), bogs, openings in peatlands, interdune marshes, peaty margins of blackwater streams.
Phenology | Flowering and fruiting April-June. Plants senesce quickly and then are difficult to find.
Identification | Swamp Wedgescale is similar to Shiny Wedgescale (S. nitida), but taller (2-3 feet vs. 1-2 feet), and the upper lemmas have a distinct awn 3-9 mm long (vs. none or rarely up to 1 mm long in that species). The inflorescence is pale green or yellowish green.
Taxonomic Comments | In some older texts, treated as Trisetum pensylvanicum.
