Distribution | Restricted to the southeastern part of the Coastal Plain, north to Craven and Jones counties.
This is a scarce species of the Coastal Plain, ranging north to southeastern NC and south to central and western FL only.
Abundance | Rare to locally uncommon, with a total of 11 known records, and about eight or nine still extant (based on the NCNHP database). Owing to the fact that this species is very rare and with a Global Rank of just G2, it is State Endangered.
Habitat | This is a rock-obligate species, limited in NC mostly to cracks in vertical banks of creeks and rivers, where marl is exposed. Habitats are mostly shaded and somewhat humid. |
Phenology | Fruits from April to October.
Identification | This is a rather small species with a very narrow blade, it averaging about 7-8 inches long but only 1 inch wide. It has evergreen leaves, with 15-30 pairs of pinnae that are opposite on the lower portions but alternate on the upper portions of the blade. The blade is one-pinnate, with each pinna mostly unlobed or with one small lobe, and small serrations along the edges. The shape of each pinna is oblong, 2/5-inch long and 1/6-inch wide, with a rounded tip. There are several sori under each pinna, these being linear in shape and diagonal to the midline of each pinna. The mainly montane A. resiliens is very similar, but its leaves are coriaceous, thicker and more blue-green (less bright green as in A. heteroresiliens), has the pinnae margins nearly entire, and all pinnae are opposite (including the uppermost ones).
