Abundance | Very rare, but may be common where found. A very large population (many hundreds) was found in a fallow cropfield in Moore County in 2021. | |
Habitat | Roadside, railroad, behind greenhouse, landscaping bed, field, fallow cropfield, waste area, atop soil pile. | |
Phenology | Flowering and fruiting June-September. | |
Identification | Slender Amaranth has terminal inflorescences (sometimes also in upper leaf axils) and only 2-3 tepals in female flowers (vs. 5 tepals in many other species). It also lacks nodal spines. With this combination of characters it is unique in NC. | |
