DistributionHistorically known from just the Sauratown Mountains in Surry and Stokes counties, but recently found in Linville Gorge in Burke County. In 2024, it was also found in Avery County by Jessica Schaner (confirmed by Alan Weakley and Ryan Folk); the site is less than 10 miles from Linville Gorge.

The above counties form the entire known range of this variety.
AbundanceThere are three recent locales known within Linville Gorge, along with one in Avery County and a few in the Sauratown Mountains. This taxon was on the Watch List (W7), with a State Rank of S1; however, by 2024, the NC NHP has moved the taxon to a Status of SR-T.
Habitat"Shaded cliff bases, nearly always in deeply shaded situations where little or no direct sunlight falls" (Weakley 2022).
Phenology
IdentificationThis taxon differs from the widespread nominate one by having "Mature leaf blades strongly sticky-viscid" as opposed to "Mature leaf blades not viscid (the texture suede-like)" (Weakley 2022).
