DistributionScattered in the Piedmont and Coastal Plain.

Native of South America; in N.A. southeastern VA to northern FL and eastern TX.
AbundanceRare, but presumably occurs in other counties in the eastern two-thirds of the state.
HabitatMesic to dry roadsides, lakeside, mesic roadside near creek.
PhenologyFlowering and fruiting March-July.
IdentificationThis everlasting has glabrous upper surfaces of the leaves, usually no hairs at all (contra G. chionesthes, G. argyrinea, and G. purpurea). It differs from G. simplicicaulis mainly in its shorter stem (less than 20 inches tall vs. 20-36 inches tall in that species) and the presence of basal leaves at flowering time (vs. usually withered in that species).
