DistributionHardly known outside of cultivation in NC: Orange County, bank of Battle Branch Creek, Chapel Hill in 2005; Montgomery County, in field at old home site in 1971 (plants were taken from there and planted in Randolph County, from which a specimen was taken). Collections from Caldwell, Iredell, Jackson, and Wake counties are all from cultivated plants.

Native of Europe; in N.A. in several northeastern states.

HabitatCreek bank, old field.
PhenologyFlowering December-May.
IdentificationThese plants grow to up to 1.5 feet. Basal leaves have long stalks, and the blades are divided into 6-15 lobes with serrate margins. The flowers eventually nod; sepals are green to purplish, the petals green to brown.
