DistributionFound outside of cultivation in 2 counties: Buncombe, ravine south of Biltmore House; Orange, stream bank in Battle Park.

Native of China, Korea, Japan; in N.A. NH to WI and NE, south to GA, MS, KS.
AbundanceVery rare. Apparently only locally escaped from cultivation.
HabitatWoods edge, wooded stream bank.
PhenologyFlowering March-May; fruiting June-September.
IdentificationBlack Jetbead indeed has jet-black, shiny berries. It is a shrub to about 6-7 feet tall, the branches ascending. Leaves are opposite, ovate, taper-pointed, and prominently veined; they look much like the leaves of Viburnum dentatum var. lucidum. Flowers are white, with 4 broad petals.
