DistributionScattered thinly across much of the state, with large gaps. Specimens have not been checked for ID.

Native of southern Europe and western Asia; in N.A. essentially throughout the U.S. but absent from the northern plains and Rocky Mountain states.
AbundanceVery rare.
HabitatNear a creek, roadside by Jordan Lake, roadside thicket, fencerow.
PhenologyFlowering in May; fruiting later.
IdentificationFirethorns are commonly planted in yards and gardens. They have small ericaceous leaves and small, usually numerous, bright red to scarlet fruits. This species has leaves with crenate margins (small blunt or rounded teeth) vs. entire margins in P. koidzumii.
Taxonomic CommentsA synonym is Cotoneaster pyracantha.
