DistributionTwo collections are known, both from 2008: Buncombe County, thicket above Spring Garden, Biltmore Estate; Burke County, Catawba River Greenway. A third from Swain County is from a nature trail, but the label says "Cultivated."

Native of eastern Asia; in N.A. NH to OH south to DE, NC, WA.
AbundanceVery rare. Cultivated as an ornamental, rarely and weakly escaping.
HabitatThicket, greenway trail.
PhenologyFlowering April-June.
IdentificationThis is a large shrub to 8 feet tall or more, many-branched. Leaves are obovate and with an abrupt drip-tip. Flowers occur in hemispherical clusters, and the petals are white. Fruits are small, bright red, and berry-like.
