DistributionCoastal islands only. Collected 3 times in the 1970s, from Bird Shoal in Carteret County (incorrectly listed in SERNEC as Beaufort County, as the town of Beaufort in Carteret County is adjacent to Bird Shoal), Bald Head Island in Brunswick County, and Wrightsville Beach in New Hanover County.

HabitatMaritime forests and barrier dunes.
PhenologyFlowering May (perhaps late April) and fruiting July-September.
IdentificationJapanese Mock-orange is a tall evergreen shrub or small tree with a broad crown. Weakley (2018) states that the lanceolate to obovate and revolute (margins turned under) leaves are characteristic. The leaves are also thick-textured. The flowers are white, 5-petaled, an dwell-stalked. The fruits are globular and rather woody.
