Native of Europe; in N.A. -- N.S. to Ont. and south to NC, MO, TX; also OR, WA.
AbundanceRare to uncommon.
HabitatRoadsides, old fields, pastures, lakeshore, disturbed areas.
PhenologyFlowering May-June; fruiting September-October.
IdentificationIn this rose the sepals are deeply incised (pinnatifid) and are of differing sizes (vs. uniform size in our native species). It differs from R. tomentosa by smaller stipules and leaflet blades -- see Weakley's (2018) key for dimensions. Var. nemoralis differs from var. rubiginosa by smaller hips and flowers.
