DistributionThe only SERNEC specimen clearly from NC was one collected in Great Smoky Mountains NP in Swain County, in 1935. The other SERNEC specimen possibly from NC reads "Nicollet Exped'n 1839" (one of 3 expeditions by Joseph Nicollet up the Missouri in the 1830s). The specimen is at herbarium NY; and thus, the specimen was not collected from NC. BONAP does not map it for NC. Weakley's (2024) maps shows it as Historical in the NC Mountains and says its presence there was "perhaps a result of former horticultural use and not seen recently (K. Langdon, pers. comm., 2016).

Native to south-central and southwestern Canada; MI to MT and south to TX and NM.
AbundanceAs the species is so far from the current natural range, east to OH, and not yet reported from WV, VA, TN, or GA, according to Weakley's (2024) map, the editors will consider this as a non-natural occurrence and thus SE.
