AuthorLamson-Scribner & C.R. Ball
DistributionSouthern Coastal Plain only; absent from Sandhills proper and there is a gap between the inner and outer portions of the Coastal Plain. The gap should be filled eventually, as there are many Carolina bays that might support populations.

Coastal Plain, N.S. and MA to FL and LA.
AbundanceUncommon to perhaps rare, but probably overlooked.
HabitatDepression ponds, depression meadows, clay-based Carolina bays, cypress savannas.
PhenologyFlowering and fruiting July-October.
IdentificationBoth subspecies of C. longifolia have slender stems and leaves compared with other members of the genus (2-7 mm wide vs. 4-12). Leaves also appear shorter, although measurements are not available. Both subspecies lack rhizomes, contra the other members of the genus. Subspecies longifolia differs from combsii by shorter spikelets (2.2-2.7 mm vs. 2.6-3.8 in FNA) and seepage habitat.
Taxonomic CommentsIn older texts Panicum longifolium var. combsii.

Members of the genus Coleataenia have been split from Panicum by the subsessile spikelets (nearly stalkless, vs. stalk greater than 2 mm long) and spikelets which grow only on one side of each branch (vs. essentially on all sides). C. anceps and C. rigidula have lower stems relatively flattened, unlike Panicum.
