DistributionMost of the specimens in the SERNEC database do not specify the variety -- only the full species. Though it is likely that most of these unspecified specimens refer to the nominate variety, the fact that var. subcordata occurs scattered throughout the eastern part of the range of the nominate form means that the website editors can not feel comfortable doling out unspecified varieties by range in the SERNEC database. However, in May 2025 Sorrie checked the ID of all specimens at NCU and has mapped them in their respective varieties. Note: the specimen from Randolph County is tentatively placed here; ID is uncertain.
AbundanceWeakley's (2018) map indicates that this variety is "common" in the Mountains and "rare" in the Piedmont, with var. subcordata being limited to the Piedmont, being "uncommon" there.
