DistributionAs far as is known, there is a single small population in Dare County at the old Little Kinnakeet Coast Guard Station on Hatteras Island. First reported there in 1959 by Clair Brown; seen at the same location in 2012 by Bruce Sorrie.

Native of South America.
AbundanceVery rare. There are several individual plants and show evidence of slow expansion.
HabitatXeric disturbed back dune at edge of oak woods.
PhenologyFlowering and fruiting - no data. Plants seen in 2012 were not in flower.
IdentificationThis is a shrub or small tree, growing up to 15 feet tall in some places. It has drooping upper branches.
Taxonomic CommentsSometimes named as O. vulgaris, apparently misapplied.
