DistributionDiscovered in NC by Becky Dill in 2021 in Anson County: Prison Camp Road N of Ridge Path Road, Polkton. Specimens are deposited at UNC Chapel Hill. Note that Weakley (2022) indicates reports from NC, apparently from the Mountains, where his map shows "?" in that province, as it is apparently native in eastern TN and in VA. However, the specimen mentioned above is certainly from a non-native population, especially as it is located in the lower Piedmont close to SC.

"ME south to NC (?) and ne. TN. Abrams Creek, Frederick County, VA. Also reported for NC by Kartesz (1999)" (Weakley 2022).
Abundance"A large colony, 8 feet wide and 4-5 feet deep". Within its main range, it is a species of calcareous wetlands, such as fens.
HabitatIn a ditch which is mowed by NC DOT, and up into a fenceline and horse pasture.
PhenologyFlowers/fruits October-November.
IdentificationThis is a tall aster, 3-5 feet tall. At flowering time, the stems leaves have dropped off in the basal half or more upper stem leaves linear-lanceolate. NC plants have multiple short to long branches that produce flower heads on their outer portions. Upper stem and branches and leaf undersides densely puberulent. ray florets pale to medium blue. In NC, similar appearing species have white rays, not pale blue.
Taxonomic CommentsThe Anson County plants appear to be var. nebraskense (Britton) Nesom. The plants of VA and TN are of var. angustior.
