Distribution | Sparingly in the Coastal Plain, and once in the southern Mountains; specimens at Florida State Herbarium from Brunswick and Pender, and at N.C. State Herbarium from Scotland and Jackson counties. It is highly likely that more specimens lie in other herbaria under the name of P. diversifolius -- because the former P. diversifolius var. trichophyllus has been re-named as P. bicupulatus.
A rather Northern species, ranging from ME and WI south to eastern NC and eastern TN.
Abundance | Unknown, though likely rare. The website editors suggest a State Rank of SU (Undetermined), as opposed to S1 or S1?, as this species is rather "new" to the NC listing in Weakley's floras. The editors also suggest a W7 Watch List status.
Habitat | Cypress pools and other acidic ponds and pools, as well as shallow streams.
Phenology | Flowers and fruits from July to September.
Identification | Very similar to P. diversifolius, but that species has "Tips of submersed leaves obtuse to acute; floating leaves rounded at apex" (Weakley 2022) as opposed to "Tips of submersed leaves acute to long-tapering; floating leaves acute at apex" in P. bicupulatus.
Taxonomic Comments | Formerly named as P. diversifolius var. trichophyllus. Weakley (2022) does not recognize this latter taxon, considering it as a synonym for P. bicupulatus -- as does NatureServe Explorer.
