Author | Nesom | |
Distribution | This is a newly described species, by Nesom in 2021. It ranges throughout all of the Mountains, and into the northwestern Piedmont.
"NS west to ON and WI, south to Mountains of VA, nw. NC, nw. TN, KY, and s. OH]" (Weakley 2022). Specimens re-labelled as T. stolonifera are found at Austin Peay University Herbarium and Carnegie Museum of Natural History Herbarium; whether these are accurately identified is not known, but some counties lie farther south than described by Nesom (2021).
Abundance | Likely fairly common to locally common, considering that it occurs in all Mountain counties south to Madison and Buncombe. The website editors suggest a State Rank of S4? for now.
Habitat | As with other Tiarella species, it occurs in rich hardwood forest, such as cove forests, and other most forests. Distinctions of habitats among the now four NC species has not been determined.
Phenology | Presumed to bloom in April and May, and fruits into June.
Identification | See the general description in the T. cordifolia account. This and T. austrina are the two colonial species, with stolons, and they occur in extensive stands. To separate these, this species has "Leaves usually with obtuse to rounded lobes, terminal lobe not prominently extended; flowering stem very rarely with a small bract; sepals 2.5-3.5 mm long"; whereas the more southerly (in NC) T. austrina has "Leaves usually with acute-acuminate lobes, terminal lobe prominently extended; flowering stem usually with 1–2 leaves or foliaceous bracts; sepals 1.5-2 mm long" (Weakley 2022). Thus, this species -- T. stolonifera -- does not have an extended terminal lobe and the lobes are more rounded; and the flowering stem usually has no small leaves or bracts.
Taxonomic Comments | Nesom described several new Tiarella species in 2021; he provided a more readable (for the public) account in 2022.
