DistributionWeakley (2022) splits out the full species into two full species -- R. fulgida and R. spathulata. The website editors question the validity of making full species out of former entities withing the overall R. fulgida, as hardly any other references and authors go this far. However, only NCU seems to have re-annotated specimens, and any map below would be highly incomplete now. Weakley's map show it as occurring in all three provinces.

More southerly range than var. fulgida, ranging from WV and VA south to northern FL and AL.

AbundanceAccording to Weakley's map, this is the more numerous taxon in the state of the R. fulgida complex. Details of abundance between these two have not been clarified.
