Distribution | Specimens known from only one or two sites in Orange County (2010 and 2022 collections), plus a sight report from Wake County.
Native to southern Europe; has been naturalized in many parts of the world, including widely in the Western U.S. | |
Abundance | Very rare in NC. Known to be a noxious weed in Pacific Coast states (fide Ward, 2023, in press). | |
Habitat | Weedy places. The Orange County sites are a mowed roadside along US 15-501 in Chapel Hill, near Mason Farm reserve. | |
Phenology | Flowers in April and May. | |
Identification | A robust member of the genus, with a gestalt of the native E. obtusata and E. spathulata, but with a woody taproot (versus herbaceous taproots in the others). It also has conspicuously villous stems and wider leaves than on the other two. The flowers (at least the bracts) are conspicuous and yellow. | |
