Distribution | Piedmont and Coastal Plain, based on map in Weakley (2023). The SERNEC database lists specimens for Burke (NCSC) and Wake (NCU) counties, both in the Piedmont. It is likely that other specimens reside in various other herbaria.

Identification | This is a hybrid between E. perfoliatum and E. serotinum, both common species of moist thickets and damp places in the state. It is most similar to the scarce E. resinosum, but this hybrid has "Leaves truncate to cuneate (at least at top of stem), usually finely serrate on upper leaves, sometimes coarsely serrate on lower leaves, widest slightly below the middle" (Weakley 2023). | |
