DistributionLower Coastal Plain. This is the more northerly variety of the species, ranging south just to eastern NC, though it does range south to Brunswick County. A review of the NC specimens of these two varieties was conducted in June 2023.

"MA and MI south to e. NC" (Weakley et al. 2023).
AbundanceFrequent, apparently more often encountered than var. odorata.
Habitat"Salt and brackish marshes" (Weakley 2023).
PhenologyBlooms from August to October.
IdentificationThis variety has "Plants usually < 6 dm tall; involucres 5.5-7 mm high, the disks 5-9 mm in diameter", as opposed to P. odorata var. odorata being "Plants to 10 (-15) dm tall; involucres 4-5.5 (-6) mm high, the disks 4-7 (-8) mm in diameter" (Weakley 2023).
Taxonomic CommentsWeakley (2023) did not include varieties in prior floras.
