Distribution | Weakley (2024) includes this variety in the NC flora, suggesting its occurrence in the Sandhills and perhaps in other areas of the state. However, his text and map indicate that it is the nominate variety -- Magnolia v. var. virginiana -- that is the primary taxon in NC. Only a few of many dozens of specimens of the full species have been identified to varieties, and thus the authors are not comfortable in populating the county map for now.
"Se. NC south to s. FL, and west to e. TX, rarely extending into more interior provinces; disjunct in nw. Cuba." (Weakley 2024).
Abundance | Probably rare to uncommon; not known with certainty, as the nominate variety may well occur with it.
Habitat | Probably mainly in pocosins and bay forests.
Phenology | Flowers from April - July; fruits from July - October.
Identification | Weakley (2024) says for var. australis: "Leaves evergreen; previous year's stems densely pubescent; mature leaves with pubescent midveins; flowers opening near sundown (2-5 hours later than var. virginiana); medium to large tree, to >20 m tall". In comparison, var. virginiana has "Leaves evergreen to deciduous (at least tardily); previous year's stems glabrous; mature leaves with few hairs along the midvein below; flowers opening mid-afternoon; shrub to multi-stemmed small tree, to 10 m (rarely to 15 m) tall" (Weakley 2024).
