DistributionMountains and Piedmont only. Details of the range are not well known, owing to the varietal status. Most herbaria have not yet re-examined specimens to varietal status.

"NY west to MN, SD, and BC, south to n. GA, TN, AR, OK, and WY" (Weakley 2024).

All of the former Polygala species in NC have now been moved to the genus Senega in 2023.
