Distribution | A few records from the central part of the state, based on iNaturalist Research Grade records and two Duke specimens. Many or most seem to be from greenhouses or emerging from soil in potted plants.
"FL (perhaps more widespread as a native in the Southeastern US than just FL); West Indies; Mexico, Central America, and South America. Although listed by RAB for the Carolinas as "a weed in and around greenhouses, not established as part of our flora", this species is well-established and weedy in Charleston, SC and Savannah, GA. Native at least in FL, and perhaps further north, the original distribution unclear" (Weakley 2024). Certainly not native in NC.
Abundance | Very rare exotic species, most records in recent years.
Habitat | Natural habitat is "Marl prairies, hammocks, pine rocklands, old rock and brick walls, urban areas, hammocks, especially in thin soil over limestone" (Weakley 2024). The NC records are highly ruderal, springing up in soil in greenhouses and potted plants, for the most part.
Phenology | Flowers and fruits all year.
Identification | This is a small plant with generally tiny leaves, and would probably be unidentifiable, even to family, for most biologists. Weakley (2024) says: "Leaf margins entire; leaves 0.1-1.0 (-1.8) cm long, the 2 leaves of a pair slightly to strongly unequal in size". Basically, this is a miniature "bush", growing 8-12 inches tall, with tiny, rounded, succulent leaves. It has small greenish flowers.
