DistributionAn exotic widely scattered in the state, more so in the Coastal Plain and especially along the southern coast. Though there are no specimens in SERNEC, the iNaturalist database has a few dozen photo records. Many or most are likely of planted individuals, but the species does occasionally spread from cultivation. For now, the editors are not mapping records, as there is no way to know which might be those that have escaped.

Native of Mexico.
AbundanceNot overly rare, especially along the southern coast.
Habitat"Disturbed areas, commonly cultivated, especially in maritime situations along the south Atlantic and Gulf coasts, persistent and spreading (including by seed) to adjacent areas." (Weakley 2024)
PhenologyBlooms mainly in May and June, and fruits into September.
IdentificationThe species has the main leaf blades linear to lanceolate, greater than 10 times as long as wide (8-27 cm long, 0.7-2 cm wide) (Weakley 2024). The corolla is typically a medium to light violet, darker than for most or all of the native Ruellia species.
Taxonomic CommentsOlder references, such as RAB (1968) named this as Ruellia brittoniana.
