Distribution | Strictly outer Coastal Plain, where recorded from nine counties from Onslow northward. There are two current populations known, one in Dare County discovered by Larry Chen in October 2024, and the second in Craven County by Eric Ungberg also in 2024.
Outer Coastal Plain from mid NJ; to se NC. Reports from MD and DE need verifying.
Abundance | Unknown, but probably rare if not locally uncommon. The Dare County population had dozens of plants. We suggest a state rank of S1S2, based on two current populations found without dedicated search, plus the number of historical specimens (15). The NC NHP does not have the species split into varieties, and its species rank is S1S2. Note that the full species is considered as Species Concern, and thus that means each variety is technically Special Concern only, the reason for the brackets. NatureServe has no varieties, as the full species is G5. The editors suggest a rank of T2? for this variety.
Habitat | The two current populations (Dare and Craven counties) are from a roadside and trailside, respectively. Historical specimens are also from mixed deciduous forest on slope by creek, sandy woods by creek, mesic beech woods near creek, edge of gum swamp, flat pine-oak woods border, oak-hickory forest, dry roadside ditch.
Phenology | Flowering period is late August-Sept.
Identification | Very similar to nominate N. albus var. albus, differing mainly by shorter achenes, shorter involucre, and pallid color of the pappus (straw color or pale tan versus rich cinnamon).
Taxonomic Comments | The former name Prenanthes alba ssp. pallida Milstead was not validly published; a new name had to be provided.
