DistributionStrictly outer Coastal Plain, where recorded from 9 counties from Onslow northward. There are 2 current populations known, one in Dare Co. discovered by Larry Chen in Oct. 2024, and the second in Craven Co. by Eric Ungberg also in 2024.

Outer Coastal Plain from mid NJ; to se NC. Reports from MD and DE need verifying.
AbundanceUnknown. The Dare Co. population had dozens of plants. We suggest a state rank of S1S2, based on 2 current populations found without dedicated search, plus the number of historical specimens (15).
HabitatThe 2 current populations (Dare and Craven counties) are from a roadside and trailside, respectively. Historical specimens are also from mixed deciduous forest on slope by creek, sandy woods by creek, mesic beech woods near creek, edge of gum swamp, flat pine-oak woods border, oak-hickory forest, dry roadside ditch.
PhenologyFlowering period is late August-Sept.
IdentificationVery similar to nominate N. albus var. albus, differing mainly by shorter achenes, shorter involucre. and pallid color of pappus (straw color or pale tan vas. rich cinnamon).
Taxonomic CommentsThe former name Prenanthes alba ssp. pallida Milstead was not validly published; a new name had to be provided.
