DistributionRecently a specimen at NCU was revealed to be this species: Haywood Co., roadside 4.5 miles S of Crabtree, 2 Apr 1958, Ahles & Duke 38773 (NCU). The specimen was annotated by Rob Naczi in 2013. Based on range maps, assumed to be limited in NC just to the Mountains.

Ont., PA, and IL south to GA, LA, and OK. Weakley's (2024a) map shows the range east to the VA Mountains and e. KY, but of uncertain occurrence in TN and SC.
AbundanceVery rare, so far as is known. A single roadside collection from 1958. This entity is not in the NCNHP database, and thus the website editors suggest a State Rank of SH (Historical).
HabitatFNA says moist deciduous forests and edges, floodplains, along streams, usually in calcareous soils. Weakley (2024a) says "Nutrient-rich mountain forests, alluvial forests".
PhenologyFlowers in spring.
IdentificationThis species is much like C. procumbens, but the fruits are 5-7 mm long (vs. 7-10 mm long), fruit surface is smooth to pubescent (vs. smooth), the longest hairs on umbel rays are 0.1-0.4 (-0.8) mm (vs. 0.6-1.2 mm).
Taxonomic CommentsIn RAB (1968) it is listed as C. procumbens var. shortii. Most recent references -- including Weakley's SE Flora (2024a) also use this (variety) as the taxon name.
