Distribution | Known only from Macon County ("Reinkes Place, Highlands") in 1938 and Buncombe County (specimen at WCUH, data withheld). However, as the Macon County record is from a cultivated specimen (according to Knapp et al., 2020), it is not included on the map below.
NC and TN, south to AL, MS, and LA.
Abundance | Of historical occurrence, if it ever were found in the wild, as opposed to in cultivation. The NCNHP has moved the species off its protected list, to SNA (Not Applicable), feeling that the only record(s) were likely from cultivation.
Habitat | Moist rocky streambanks, clayey soils of montane woodlands and forests -- in shadier habitats than most other Marshallia species.
Phenology | Flowering and fruiting May-July. Plants often form colonies from horizontal rhizomes.
Identification | This species has the widest leaves of all the NC Barbara's-buttons -- up to 1.2 inches wide and lanceolate- to ovate-shaped, with an acuminate tip. Stems grow 1-2 feet tall, terminated by 1-5 heads of pink florets.
