DistributionReportedly in the Coastal Plain and lower Piedmont, according to Semple et al. (2015), but those authors provided no list of specimens nor a distribution map. On the other hand, Weakley's (2024) map shows it occurring from VA to FL and west to TX, including in all provinces of NC -- essentially the southern portion of the full species' range. We must leave our map blank for now, as there is such uncertainty regarding its range. See Taxonomic Comments.

"Se. VA, NC, TN, AR, and OK south to c. peninsular FL, s. TX, and adjacent Mexico" (Weakley 2024).

Taxonomic CommentsThis variety was resurrected by Semple et al (2015). However, reading the text on page 15 does not inspire confidence in the validity of var. pluricephala. Taxon editors of this website suggest waiting until botanists come to a consensus before formally recognizing it here. Weakley (2024) does include it as a variety.
