DistributionSandhills and most of the remainder of the Coastal Plain, with a gap in the south-central part of the province that may or may not be real.

Coastal Plain, N.S.; southeastern MA to northern FL and southern AL.
AbundanceUncommon to infrequent in the Sandhills region; generally rare to locally uncommon elsewhere in the Coastal Plain, being very rare to absent in the easternmost counties (no records east of Chowan and Craven counties). The NCNHP's State Rank of S2? is too conservative, and there are certainly enough records to assign a rank of S3 to the species.
HabitatWet blackwater streamheads, Sandhills seeps, wet pine savanna-pocosin ecotones, seepages in powerline clearings and ditches. Often in sphagnum moss.
PhenologyFlowering and fruiting August-October.
IdentificationElliott's Goldenrod is a tall plant, 3-6 feet tall in NC (but reportedly much taller elsewhere), the stem very leafy with narrowly elliptic, pointed, marginally toothed leaves. Stem and leaves are glabrous. The inflorescence is usually compact and triangular in outline. It closely resembles S. aestivalis, but that species has scattered (sparse to moderately numerous), appressed, straight, white hairs on the leaf undersides that diverge 90 degrees from the midvein and side-veins. Also, the middle involucral bracts are definitely blunt or rounded (vs. pointed in S. aestivalis). Both of these species are restricted to acidic wetlands, mostly near pine stands, and often with sphagnum moss. This species often grows with or near the quite common S. fistulosa, but that species has clasping leaves and coarsely hairy stems.
Taxonomic CommentsFormerly known as S. elliottii.
