| Identification | Elliott's Goldenrod is a tall plant, 3-6 feet tall in NC (but reportedly much taller elsewhere), the stem very leafy with narrowly elliptic, pointed, marginally toothed leaves. Stem and leaves are glabrous. The inflorescence is usually compact and triangular in outline. It closely resembles S. aestivalis, but that species has scattered (sparse to moderately numerous), appressed, straight, white hairs on the leaf undersides that diverge 90 degrees from the midvein and side-veins. Also, the middle involucral bracts are definitely blunt or rounded (vs. pointed in S. aestivalis). Both of these species are restricted to acidic wetlands, mostly near pine stands, and often with sphagnum moss. This species often grows with or near the quite common S. fistulosa, but that species has clasping leaves and coarsely hairy stems. | |
