DistributionVouchered from 3 counties in the Sandhills and adjacent upper Coastal Plain. First collected in 1965 from Weymouth Woods Sandhills Nature Preserve (Moore County).

Native of Mediterranean Europe; in N.A. MA and NY to MD; NC; B.C. to OR.
AbundanceRare. Extant at several locations in Moore County (especially just SW of the county airport), and at least one on Fort Bragg (Hoke County).
HabitatDry to xeric sandy soil of roadsides, margin of airport, margin of parachute drop zone, regenerating fields.
PhenologyFlowering May-July.
IdentificationSheep's-bit is an odd plant up to 1.5 feet tall and with many short, linear leaves. The flowers occur in hemispherical to globular heads averaging 1 inch wide, held high above the foliage. Each of the many flowers is blue to pale blue. At a distance, the inflorescence looks like a single composite flower, such as Stokesia laevis, Cyanus segetum, or Marshallia sp.
