Distribution | Low to middle elevations in the Mountains, and the northern half of the Piedmont, extending east to Wilson County. A record from Moore County is a misidentification. Due to previous confusion between this species and Fernald's Thoroughwort (E. fernaldii), and the very closely related Vasey's Thoroughwort (E. vaseyi), all records need vetting.

Abundance | Uncommon and local in the northern Piedmont and lower Mountains. Formerly was tracked as Significantly Rare by the NCNHP, but many recent records have been made, and they have moved it to a Watch List status. Even Watch List status seems no longer warranted.
Habitat | Dry woodlands and borders, powerline clearings near upland woods, mainly on circumneutral soil.
Phenology | Flowering and fruiting July-October.
Identification | Godfrey's Thoroughwort is an apomictic species, derived from hybridization of E. rotundifolium x sessilifolium. As might be expected from its parentage, its leaves are shorter and less pointed than those of Fernald's Thoroughwort. In addition, its leaves have sparse resin dots (vs. abundant). In general, the leaves are lanceolate, about 3 times longer than wide, with obvious serrations. Due to previous confusion between this and Fernald's Thoroughwort, and the very closely related E. vaseyi, all records need vetting.
Taxonomic Comments | Synonyms are E. vaseyi (in part) and E. sessilifolium var. vaseyi.
