DistributionDiscovered in NC in October 2021 at two sites in the New Hope Creek drainage of the lower Piedmont of Durham County. Specimens collected by Steve Hall and John Kent are at herbarium NCU (=UNC Chapel Hill).

Widespread in the Coastal Plain and Mississippi Embayment; considered by Weakley (and others) to be native north to SC and MO. Disjunct and non-native to central NC.
AbundanceVery rare on the landscape. Small numbers of plants occur at each site.
HabitatOne population occurs in an artificial stormwater drainage channel; the second at the edge of a sluggish tributary of New Hope Creek.
PhenologyPlants had fruits in October and November.
IdentificationHighly distinctive relative to other NC plants, in part due to its large size and exotic look. Leaves are basal, held erect to ascending, blades narrowly elliptic to elliptic, up to 2 feet long, glaucous on underside. The long leafstalks grow from a thick rhizome, are fleshy, and taper from base to the leaf blade. The overall aspect of the leaves is tropical, like members of the genus Heliconia (lobster-claws). Flower stalks equal or exceed the leaves, with a terminal panicle of violet or lavender 3-petaled flowers. Flowers grow crowded on zig-zag branches of the panicle. Fruits are also violet or bluish, and round.
