Habitats and Life History
Habitats: One of our two records comes from a yard in a rural area in the Asheville Basin where New Jersey Tea was growing in the immediate vicinity along a forest edge. This is one of the driest areas in the state and supports a substantial amount of dry woodland habitats. The other site contains an example of Ultramafic Outcrop Barrens, supporting a open, prairie or savanna-like vegetation. A population of Mottled Duskywing has also been recorded at this site, indicating the presence of the host plant used by both of these species, Ceanothus americana.
Larval Host Plants: Larvae appear to be monophagous on New Jersey Tea (Ceanothus americana) (Wagner et al., 2001). - View

Status in North Carolina
Natural Heritage Program Status: [SR]
Natural Heritage Program Ranks: G3 SNR [S1]
State Protection:
Comments: As with other species associated with New Jersey Tea, this species appears to be under severe threat due to overgrazing by White-tailed Deer. At the site where this species was found in Madison County, 2020, White-tailed Deer have dramatically reduced the number of Ceanothus plants on the property.
