Habitats and Life History
Habitats: Barren, forests, woodlands, parks, yards (Wagner, 2005). Our records come from a wide range of forests, woodlands, and shrublands.
Larval Host Plants: Larvae are highly polyphagous, feeding on a wide range of hardwood trees, shrubs, and vines. Wagner (2005) specifically lists maple (Acer), birch (Betula), chestnut (Castanea), hackberry (Celtis), dogwood (Cornus), hawthorn (Crataegus), American Beech (Fagus grandifolia), American Witch-hazel (Hamamelis virginiana), cherry (Prunus), oak (Quercus), rose (Rosa), blackberry (Rubus), American Basswood (Tilia americana), and elm (Ulmus). In North Carolina, larvae have been recorded feeding on Box-elder (Acer negundo), buckeye (Aesculus), serviceberry (Amelanchier), River Birch (Betula nigra), Allegheny Chinquapin (Castanea pumila), Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis), chestnut (Castanea), American Persimmon (Diospyros virginiana), Honey Locust (Gleditsia triacanthos), Carolina Silverbells (Halesia carolina), Black Walnut (Juglans nigra), Bluejack Oak (Q. incana), Cherrybark Oak (Quercus pagoda), Willow Oak (Q. phellos), Northern Red Oak (Q. rubra), blackberry (Rubus), Northern Highbush Blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum), and Sparkleberry (V. arboreum). The common name Morning-glory Prominent (from the scientific name ipomaeae) is a strangely specific choice for such a polyphagous species, and probably an error as well, as there do not seem to be any confirmed records of larvae feeding on Ipomoea. - View
