Comments: One of 103 species in this genus that occur in North America (Gall and Hawks, 2010; Kons and Borth, 2015a,b), 67 of which have been recorded in North Carolina.

Adult Markings: The ground color of the forewings is pale gray but may be suffused with brown or blotched with white in some forms (Forbes, 1954). In typical specimens, there is at least a darker stain over the reniform (Sargent, 1976). A basal dash is absent and the lines are otherwise normal. A white subreniform spot is one of the most conspicuous features of the forewing, with a pale area extending obliquely upward towards the costa. The hindwings have a distinctive, continuous band of yellow running through the center of the wing, bordered on both sides by black. The fringe is pale and typically yellowish, and checkered with black along the veins.
Wingspan: 70-80 mm (Sargent, 1976)

Distribution: Restricted in North Carolina to the mountains.
