Hyperstrotia villificans (Barnes & McDunnough, 1918) - No Common Name

Species Status: Hyperstrotia villificans was the name that was previously applied to most of the specimens of this complex that have been recorded in North Carolina. Lafontaine & Schmidt (2015), however, reported that villificans was actually a synonym of H. nana. That decision, however, was subsequently retracted by Schmidt et al. (2018), based on DNA analysis, but without providing any way to distinguish between the two species based on external features. We kept the name that we had been previously using but new information indicates that true villificans is a more northern species and that the form we have is what is currently recognized as nana. Consequently, we have now moved all of our records to that name, although it remains to be confirmed that villificans does not, in fact, occur in North Carolina.
