Habitats and Life History
Habitats: Like other members of this genus, habitats include croplands, fields, waste places and other open areas (Wagner et al., 2011). Our records come from barrier islands, savannas, sand ridges, and lakeshores. Many of our records, particularly inland from the coast, probably represent fall migrants.
Larval Host Plants: Larvae are broadly polyphagous on herbaceous species, including many crop species and weeds. Wagner et al. (2011) specifically list Amaranthus, Celery (Apium graveolens), cotton (Gossypium), Sweet Potato (Ipomoea batatas), tobacco (Nicotiana), pokeweed (Phytolacca), Garden Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), Potato (Solanum tuberosum), and Corn (Zea mays). In North Carolina, larvae have been recorded feeding on cabbage, Sweet Potato, Maritime Pokeweed (Phytolacca rigida), Sicklepod (Senna obtusifolia), and tomato. - View
