Species Status: The type locality is the vicinity of Pensacola, ca. 5 mi. south of Burnsville in Yancey County (Shelley, 1981)

Distribution in North Carolina
Distribution: The range of this subspecies is surrounded by that of S. n. intermedia (Shelley, 1981). It is located to the west and north of the Black Mountains and includes at least a portion of the Craggy Mountains.

Habitats and Life History
Habitats: Shelley (1981) does not characterize the habitat used by this subspecies but notes that it occupies the headwaters of two drainages on either side of a divide. Very likely, this subspecies can be regarded as a cove-inhabitant, similar to the desciption given to the other members of this species
