Paratettix cucullatus (Burmeister, 1838) - Hooded Pygmy Grasshopper

Taxonomy

Species Status: Paratettix is one of four genera in the subfamily Tetriginae. Members of this group have fewer than 15 segments; the middle femurs are laterally compressed and carinate dorsally; and the front edge of the pronotum is usually truncate except in Nomotettix, where it is angulate and projecting forward (Hancock, 1902; Blatchley, 1920). In Paratettix, the fastigium when viewed from above truncate and not projecting beyond the eyes. The pronotum is flat dorsally and granulose; the front margin is convex.

Structural Features: Middle femur three times as long as wide and strongly lobed beneath. Median carina of the pronotum weakly developed behind the anterior margin; the apex extends 3 mm beyond the tips of the hind femora. All individuals are long-winged with the tips surpassing the tip of the pronotum by 3 mm (Blatchley, 1920).
