Comments:
A small, dark reddish-brown Camel Cricket. A contrasting stripe of red-orange runs along the dorsal surface of the thorax and the lower portion of the lateral lobes of the thorax are pale whitish or yellowish (Hubbell, 1936). Subspecies angulosus has a similar dorsal stripe but the sides of the thorax are all dark (Eades, 1962). Ceuthophilus carolinus -- which was described from sites in northern South Carolina but has not yet been found in North Carolina (see map in Hubbell, 1936) -- also has a dark ground color and a contrasting orange stripe along the dorsal surface.
Total Length [body plus wings; excludes ovipositor]:
Length of pronotum is 3.0-5.4 mm, males; 3.1-5.4 mm, females (Hubbell, 1936, for C. nigricans)
