Field Guide Descriptions: Online Resources: BugGuide, Wikipedia, GBIF
Comments: Sawyers are large beetles with very long antennae. Monochamus carolinensis is reddish-brown with distinct pale dorsal stripes on the pronotum (Yanega, 1996). The elytra are mottled with pale and dark patches but are less distinct than found in M. titillator, particularly in the posterior area (Yanega, 1996; Lingafelter, 2007). The patches on the basal area of the elytra are the most contrasting (Yanega, 1996).
Total Length [body plus wings; excludes ovipositor]: 15-23 mm (Yanega, 1967)
Structural Features: The thorax possesses strong lateral spines, as in other members of this genus. Terminal sutural spines are present in this species but are weaker than in M. titillator (Yanega, 1996; Lingafelter, 2007). The punctures on the elytra are larger and more crowded than in titillator (Yanega, 1996).
