Description: Males are black, with the rims of the eyes and the legs yellow. The wings are blackish-brown to black, with contrasting pale yellow to whitish venation; the preapical spot on the costal margin of each wing is whitish. Females are variable in color, ranging from as dark as the male to tan marked with black frontal arcs on the head, black metacoxae, and a blackish-brown to black median band on the head. The pronotum and scutellum are black, and there are infuscated markings on the wings between pale veins. There is a brown to black band along the costal margin of the wings, and a blackish-brown mark at the edge of the wing tips. Teneral females can be quite pale with tan coloration, while "more mature" tenerals can have a reddish body; in these tenerals, the distinctive wing pattern is still noticeable. Adult males are 4.9-5.6 mm long (excluding the abdomen), females are 5.9-6.5 mm. (Hamilton, 1983)

Nymphs are variable in coloration, ranging from blackish overall with a reddish-pink head that has two small black dots to tan with fuscous bands on the sides of the body.

Distribution in North Carolina

Habitats and Life History
Habitats: Has been found in grassy, brushy areas near montane forest.
Plant Associates: Recorded from Persicaria perfoliata and Phytolacca (DL).
Behavior:
Comment: There are two records of E. orbitalis from Haywood county. This species is similar in coloration and pattern to E. nigramericanus, though is smaller. It is not clear at this point if these records pertain to misidentified nigramericanus.
