description |
A pale yellowish species with a bold, distinctive but narrow reddish crossband that narrows basally (toward the wing edge). The shape of the crossband itself, and the extent of red, can vary among individuals; in some adults the red does not make it all the way to the wing edge, instead consisting of two pairs of red block-shaped patches connected to each other, while in other individuals the crossband can appear faded. The top of the head has two parallel orange submedial lines, often with a lateral branch (giving the appearance of ciruclar white spots on the vertex), and the midline is a pale oval-shaped mark. The pronotum has a "Y" or "V"-shaped yellowish mark, and the scutellum is yellow. The face and underside of the thorax are pale. There is a black spot on the costal margin of the wings, as well as a bold one on the inner margin of each wing tip. Adults are 2.8- 3.1 mm long. (3I)

This species could potentially be confused with E. osborni: note the differences in the width of the red transverse band in both species. In osborni, the band is very broad (taking up the entire base of the wings) and reaches the wing edges; in era, the band in much narrower and usually does not reach the wing edges and, if it does, its usually a thin line.
Some color variations of E. era could also be confused with E. micheneri. While E. era typically has a red band transversing the wings, some individuals have an incomplete band restricted to the middle of the wings, formed out of red shapes. Note though that the red in these individuals is much larger than in micheneri, usually angled upwards and not in a cube shape; the smaller red mark on either side is also bigger in E. era and connected with the larger marks, giving the impression of a continuous red patch. This is not the case in E. micheneri, where the small and larger red marks are distinct from one another. |
