Taxonomy
Superfamily: Geometroidea Family: GeometridaeSubfamily: LarentiinaeTribe: HydriomeniniP3 Number: 910172.00 MONA Number: 7329.00
Comments: A genus of some 17 species described from Europe and the Americas. We have two species in the east which seem quite different from each other. The type species for the genus is from Austria and it seems very unlikely that the genus is valid phylogenetically.
Species Status: Specimens from North Carolina do not differ significantly from those over much of North America.
Identification
Field Guide Descriptions: Beadle and Leckie (2012)Online Photographs: MPG, BugGuide, iNaturalist, Google, BAMONA, GBIF, BOLDTechnical Description, Adults: Forbes (1948, as Earophila vasiliata)
Adult Markings: The forewing pattern is distinct and there should be no confusion with other species that fly at the same time. Sexes are similar.
Adult Structural Features: The genitalia are distinct, the male has a strikingly sclerotized costa that projects beyond the valve tip; the female appears to have two signa, well separated, the ductus has a sclerotized collar and the ostial plate is sclerotized and expanded. Only the sclerotized collar is found in A. multiferata.
Structural photos
Adult ID Requirements: Identifiable from good quality photos of unworn specimens.
Immatures and Development: The green caterpillar with small, white pinacula forming dots and reddish caudal side is distinct.
Larvae ID Requirements: Identifiable from good quality photos, especially where associated with known host plants.
Distribution in North Carolina
Distribution: It does not appear to venture far from the mountains but the foothill area is poorly collected, especially in the early spring.
County Map: Clicking on a county returns the records for the species in that county.
