Habitats and Life History
Habitats: Associated with hardwood forests in the Mountains, Piedmont, and at least some sites in the Coastal Plain. A possible association with pocosin habitats needs to be investigated.
Larval Host Plants: Feeds primarily on Witch Hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) (Wagner et al., 2011), but Jim Petranka recently found larvae feeding on Fothergilla major, a member of the same family as Witch Hazel (Hamamelidaceae). Since at least some of our records for this species in the Coastal Plain come from savannas or pocosin ecotones, larvae should also be looked for on F. gardenii, a common plant along the edges of peatlands. - View

Comment: Caterpillars are consistent with those illustrated in Wagner (2005, p. 455) and images at BugGuide. Individuals were feeding on Fothergilla major in a native plant garden and were skeletonizing the upper leaf surfaces during the early morning hours.
